Captain America Hugo Weaving as Red Skull

Captain America VillainActor Hugo Weaving (you may remember him from LOTR or Wolfman) has been hired to play the role of Red Skull, Captain America's nemesis, in the upcoming Captain America movie directed by Joe Johnston.

I'm quite glad to hear that because Hugo Weaving is a talented actor and his performance as the Red Skull won't disappoint: he will respect the complexity and depth of that vicious villain!

Captain America directed by Joe Johnston

Director Joe Johnston who's the lucky bastard hired to helm the upcoming Captain America movie talked to the Box Office Magazine about his take on the film:

"It is influenced by the comic book, but it goes off in a completely different direction. It's the origin story of Captain America. It's mostly period—there are modern, present-day bookends on it—but it's basically the story of how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. The great thing about Captain America is he's a super hero without any super powers. Which is why this story, among the hundreds of super hero stories, appealed to me the most. He can't fly, he can't see through walls, he can't do any of that stuff. He's an every man who's been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen—the pinnacle of human perfection.
How does that affect him? What does that mean for him emotionally and psychologically? He was this 98-pound weakling, he was this wimp, and he's transformed instantly into this Adonis. You'd think he got everything he wanted. Well, he didn't get everything he wanted. The rules change at that point and his life gets even more complicated and dire. For me, that's the interesting part of the story.
It's got some great action sequences in it and some incredible stuff that we've never seen before. But at the heart of it, it's a story about this kid who all he wants to do is fit in. This thing happens and he still doesn't fit in. And he has to prove himself a hero—essentially go AWOL to save a friend. Eventually at the very end, I don't want to give away to much, but he does fit in. But it's the journey of getting him there that's interesting. And it's a lot of fun."
Director Joe Johnston

I wasn't much thrilled when I learned about Joe Johnston directing Captain America, but it seems that he does understand the character at least. So let's wait and see how his take on Captain America is going to turn out!

Captain America Crossover, Easter Eggs and Clues

Easter eggs and clues hinting at the upcoming Captain America movie scheduled in 2011 by Marvel have been sprinkled in the two last superhero movies:

In the movie Iron Man:

There was an Easter egg added by the production to tease us:
(Click on the picture to enlarge it.)
One may see an object with a familiar white star painted on, under Tony Stark's arm. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has confirmed what fans were thinking: it is indeed the famous shield of Captain America seen in Tony Stark's workshop.

In The Incredible Hulk:

General Ross mentions to Emil Blonsky that there was a World War II program that created a supersoldier serum. The general is obviously referring to Operation: Rebirth, which was seeking to develop a means of creating physically superior soldiers. And in the movie Dr. Josef Reinstein is indeed referenced as the inventor of the Super-Soldier serum: the blue liquid hold by Sam Sterns in the picture below.

Super-soldier serum that links the Incredible Hulk to Captain America.
Also, when Genral Bolt goes into a secret room to take the serum to transform Bronsky, one may see the logo 'Vita-Ray' on a refrigerated gas bottle , which is the second component, along with the Super-Soldier serum, of the original Captain America formula.
(Click on the picture to enlarge it.)
Vita Ray logo is a reference to Captain America.

Besides those easter eggs and clues, there could be a real crossover scene showing Captain America in store with the upcoming DVD release of the Incredible Hulk:

"There's a point when Bruce Banner gives up on his quest for the cure and decides to kill himself. So he travels far North and reaches the Arctic Circle. You might have seen bits of it in some of the promos. The result was a very dark and strong scene, which Marvel, me and everyone else considered to be too hard to young audiences to take, so we've cut it. Having that said, when Bruce arrives at his destination he meets up with Captain America! At some point this week, we will make it available on the internet – but I cannot tell you where or when – and the material will definitely be on the DVD."
Director Louis Leterrier

Incredible Hulk DVD showing Captain America frozen in the ice: too bad they cut the scene showing Captain America! Shall wait to watch this scene then: Captain America is worth waiting a bit!

Update: we now have a screen capture from the Incredible Hulk DVD giving a glimpse of Captain America:
(Click on the picture to enlarge it.)

Hope to have a clip showing Captain America in the Arctic ice as soon as the DVD of the Incredible Hulk is released!

The First Avenger: Captain America Is A Reboot Movie!

Yeap! The Captain America movie scheduled in 2011 can indeed be considered as a reboot movie.

Actually, a low-budget Captain America movie, starring Matt Salinger as Steven Grant Rogers / Captain America, was released in 1990. But the film did not reach fans' expectations although it was rather entertaining:

Captain America Trailer (1990)

Must admit that the Captain America interpreted by Matt Salinger was kind of starry eyed... If Marvel really wants the film to sell they should hire a director like Christophe Nolan or Louis Leterrier, they are both experts in movie reboot!

Captain America Movie in 2011

Captain AmericaCaptain America is one of the most famous superheroes from Marvel Comics. So a movie dedicated to the patriotic hero is but a long overdue!

Thanks to the recent success of Iron Man, Marvel has finally enough guts to undertake a new Captain America movie and is ready to provide with the cash required to make the film a blockbuster.

Nothing has really surfaced yet about the director and the cast. But scriptwriter Zak Penn who worked on the Incredible Hulk has been selected to write the screenplay of Captain America.

The movie, titled The 'First Avenger: Captain America', is slated a for a May 2011 release.

The plot:
"After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals." (source: IMDb)

Captain America will be a period piece set entirely during World War II. With Marvel scrutinizing the work done, the movie Captain America should be close to the comic book. So we may expect the presence of Captain America's greatest foe, Nazi leader the Red Skull, in the cast.

Impatient to see the first Avenger Captain America?
